Letter to our ONE year old

Dear Lucy,

You haven't received the same treatment when it comes to letters.  But let me tell you how amazing we think you are.

In the past year, we have found ourselves completely taken aback at the amount of love one child could bring our family.  It was a complete surprise when we found out we were expecting.  Not to Luke of course, he KNEW he was getting a baby.  And when we found out you were a girl, we were completely shocked and had the ultrasound tech double check.  Luke of course was not surprised...not only did he know we were pregnant, he knew you were a girl.

When you were born we couldn't believe that you were the biggest baby yet!  At over 9 pounds, we just were in awe at how big you were!  And your cry!  Oh my gosh!  Best cry ever.  And talk about being laid back, you really were easy going.  I think you knew you were a third child and was just going to have to wait your turn.  And your cheeks - I think they were the chubbiest cheeks I've ever laid eyes on.

We put you in daycare much sooner than your brothers, at only 6 weeks.  I came every day at lunch to check on you and nurse you and cuddle you.  You didn't mind being left and actually became excited every time we'd walk in to school and even more excited when you saw your teachers.  You've really come to love them and we trust them with you.

You finally started crawling right at a year old. Every time we tried to put you on your belly for tummy time you'd lay your head down and just cry.  And when we finally came to pick you up, you growled at us to express your hatred for tummy time.  You definitely have a stubborn streak...I hope it serves you well over the years to come.

You love love love your brothers.  And the feeling is reciprocated.  Luke is awesome at walking you around the house, Owen loves to help feed you your yogurt in the morning for breakfast and you just love any attention they're willing to give.

And you love Baxter.  You constantly say 'Bax' and go off looking for him.  I'm not sure if it's because you want to pull his hair or make sure you keep track of everyone in the family, but it's really sweet.  And he takes it because you constantly drop food from your high chair for him to eat.

You love your bath time.  Splashing and playing with your bath toys can take you from cranky to happy in milliseconds.  Some days it's really hard to get you out because of the great time you're having and your unwillingness to get out.

We are so excited to see you grow this next year, but not to fast sweetie.

We love you!

Letter to my 3 year old

Dear O,

You are fantastically crazy.  All.the.time.  Your little body holds so much personality there's not enough time in the day to let you get it all out.   It's really a sight in and of itself.

We celebrated your birthday at a church here in town that has some tubes to play in.  We had Luke's birthday at the same place and then you were a little scared to climb into any of the tubes and really just played on the baby toys.  It's amazing how six months made you so brave!  For your birthday you climbed right in and followed Luke around to get the feel for everything and then there was no stopping you.  Your birthday was a Bubble Guppy theme.  Your cake (which you requested) was all done up so cute, and then you wouldn't eat a bite.  I knew we should've just gotten a big bowl of ice cream for you :)

We are a few short days away from welcoming your new baby sister into our family and you did have a little breakdown about her arrival.  While we were in the car one morning you started crying because the baby wasn't going to be a boy like you.  You were distraught and I'm sorry, but I thought it was hilarious.  And you insist that her name is going to be 'daddy'.  We'll see how you really feel when she comes home and doesn't leave.

You have this really terrible habit of putting your hand down your pants.  It's constantly a fight with you.  You go to sleep that way, wake up that way, walk around that way.  It's ridiculous, but apparently it's natural for little boys.  I've had enough of it though.

I think your favorite activity (other than the pre mentioned habit) is wrestling with your brother.  You and he can wrestle until someone gets hurt and then start right back again.  I'm so glad you and Luke are so close, it's really sweet to watch you hold hands across the parking lot, give hugs and kisses before you go your separate way at school and at night before bedtime.  I love the way y'all come up with games to play, work together to do puzzles and 'cook' and just enjoy each other's company.  Most of the time.

You're a great eater and typically try new things without too much of a fight.  You really aren't a bread fan, but you can definitely put away some Red Lobster biscuits.  You like egg rolls, lo mien, hot dogs, hamburgers, peas, green beans, mexican rice, quesadillas, chips, grapes, bananas and the list just keeps going.  We really love that you're so willing to eat!

We love you our little 3 year old maniac.  To the moon and back.

Letter to my 5 year old

Dear Luke,

We celebrated your fifth birthday and you had such a fun time!  We had your party at the 1st Nazarene Church play land.  It's a big area with tubes and slides and you and your friends had a great time playing for almost two hours straight!  You got lots of Transformers and your birthday was Transformers theme.  You liked to tell people it was a grown-up transformers party because we couldn't find any Rescue Bot transformer party things.  On your actual birthday you decided you wanted to eat at iHop.  M, Pa and Grandma came, too.  You loved all the attention.

On the morning of your birthday you woke up and told me you were ready for Kindergarten.  You were pretty disappointed when I explained that you had to wait for the new school year to start.

You are so incredibly smart.  You're learning to sound out words.  You know your address, my phone number, everyone's first and last names, you know how to add and match and draw and all sorts of things!  You love school and your teacher in your pre-K program, Mrs. Amanda, says that you always know the answers.  We are all seriously impressed with how much you know.

You love playing games.  For Christmas you got a Zingo! game that you love playing with me and Owen.  You love playing Disney Twister and matching games.  You also love Tic Tac Toe and puzzles.  Every time you win, you say 'Wow!  I'm lucky!'.  I love it.  You love wrestling with your dad.  It amazes me at how rough you and Owen are with your dad, but he loves it.  He jumps on the trampoline with you and bounces you all over.  You laugh and laugh and ask to do it over and over.  You have such fun in whatever it is you're doing.

We take you and Owen to the library every Tuesday night.  They have bedtime stories with cookies and milk afterwards.  The librarian always reads the funniest books and you love it.  Reading books is one of your favorite things.  Before we go to the library we go eat at Chik fil A or iHop.  You and Owen love it.  On Wednesday nights you go to gymnastics.  I pick you up from school, but before I come get you I stop and pick up a Sprite and tater tots from Sonic.  You also love gymnastics.  You bounce from spot to spot, love jumping in the foam pit and whatever else they do to work with you.  We thought about putting you in t-ball, but there was a chance it would interfere with gymnastics and you just love it too much to risk missing it.

You're going to be a big brother again!  You are adamant that the baby is a girl.  Whenever we mention boy names you say, 'It's a not boy!  He's a girl!'  If this baby turns out to be a boy I know you'll be very disappointed.  But I know that you'll be a terrific big brother to this baby, just like you are with Owen.

Your favorite colors are now red and green.  You recently changed your mind from blue and orange.  Also, you recently told me that your favorite days are Christmas and beach days.  I have to say, I agree.

We moved a few months ago and it's taken a while for you to really adjust.  The first little bit you were scared to sleep in your new room.  This house is bigger than where we did live and it took a little time for you to get accustomed to your new room.  You had an even harder time adjusting to our new church.  I felt so bad dropping you off in Primary with tears streaming down your cheeks.  I know it was hard, it was hard on me.  We both sat outside on the steps one Sunday and cried together.  But now we're adjusting and you're getting used to church it's becoming a lot easier.

I love to see how you grow each day.  You just have the best personality and love to play.  You make friends easily and are really becoming independent.  I can't believe you are already FIVE!

We love you…to infinity and beyond.

Letter to a TWO year old

Owen dear,

You are two years old!  And you know what they say about the terrible two's?  Yeah, it's all true with you.  Sweet one minute, crazy the next.  Kind and lovable one day, meaner than snot the next.

You are a brick.  You've jumped from being around the 75th percentile for weight to 95%.  You are a whopping 32.6 pounds (and to put that in perspective, that's 10 pounds less than your brother).  Your teachers at school (Ms. Heather and Mrs. Ony) say they worry when you come running at them full speed for fear you'll knock them over.  Almost everyone we see, whether we know them or not, comment on you being a future football player.

You are constantly saying 'mommy'.  You yell it from across the house, you say it from the backseat.  Anytime, anywhere.  Over and over and over again.  I've thought about changing my name, but I'm sure you'd just repeat that over and over again like you do 'mommy'.  It makes me crazy, but I know you just need a little extra attention.

We still haven't conquered the pacifier.  It seriously is going to be the fight of our lives to get rid of them.  We thought you were making headway when you threw two pacifiers in the trash, but then you got sick and we were forced to get you another because we were traveling.  There's no sense in all of us being miserable.  Sometimes, just to make your point you aren't relenting in the war against the pacifiers, you'll walk around with two pacifiers in your mouth.  It's quite the sight.

You really like to be held, touched, carried, loved on, played with, etc.  Since day one of your life, you have always longed to be next to us.  It's not enough to be sitting next to us on the couch, you need to be on our laps or crawling all over us.  It's a little exhausting, but without that, you wouldn't be you.

You love to play and fight with Luke.  You worry if Luke's not with us and ask about where he is.  He gets you into a lot of trouble.  A lot.  I hope that your conscience will guide you as you get older so that you know when he's trying to rope you into doing something that will lead you to trouble.  He's good about getting y'all to the edge and then letting you do the dirty work so you get into trouble when he's looking nice and innocent.  Don't worry, we know he's not innocent.

We didn't throw a party for this birthday.  We just moved to the new house and had a ton of unpacking to do.  We did get a cake for you and we celebrated in Fort Smith with Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle Jon, Aunt Emily and Baby Brooke.

You love to go to the pool.  Your favorite thing to do is jumping in from the side.  You get up and say 'ready, jump!' and jump into our arms.  I don't know where we'll go swimming now, there's really not a pool around here.  I guess it's time you learn to swim in the lake.  I can't wait to take you on the boat and go tubing and teach you and Luke how to ski!

You're so fantastic and we love you dearly.
Happy two years old, mister!

Letter to Baby

Dear Owen,

You know, we now affectionately call you b-rat.  It's half true, you really can be a b-rat, but part of it is learning, growing, exploring, and not having the vocabulary to communicate your thoughts and feelings appropriately.  But today, I'm the b-rat because I let you 22 month letter pass by and the 23 month letter sneak up on me.  So, we're just going to combine them.  Ok?  Ok.

You're doing great without your paci at school.  You know you have to leave it in the car and willingly do so when we pull into the parking lot.  But it is one of the first things you ask for when we get back in the car when I pick you up in the afternoons.  We've even started running errands without it.  We're all getting brave :)  And when we get to school you run as fast as you can to push the button on the elevator, so I have to stop you so we can take Luke to class first.  After we drop Luke off then you run again to the elevator, and I have to follow close behind, because I know if you got on that elevator by yourself, you're perfectly capable of hitting the correct button to the first floor and riding that elevator down.  You'd probably be pretty proud of yourself and meanwhile I'd be flipping out.

You are becoming such a little water baby!  Just the last couple of weeks you have gone from sitting at the edge of the pool and jumping into our arms to standing and taking a flying jump into our arms.  Sometimes you don't even wait for us to get close enough to catch you so you go under until your floaties bring you back up and you have this wide eyed expression that says 'let's do it again!'.  You even tried jumping off the diving board, except you didn't so much jump as you did fall.  I was there to catch you but you didn't want to do it again.  You thought it was hilarious when your dad jumped in.  You are so good to get out of the pool when it's time for adult swim and you go with dad and Luke to pick out a treat from the concession stand.

We went to the zoo again yesterday.  We have a season pass so we go quite often.  You love to get some fish food and throw it in and watch the fish fight over the food.  You love to see the monkeys and elephants and you make the best elephant noise.  We also love to see the lions and tigers.  Right now there are 4 baby tigers at the zoo that are so fun to watch.  You crack up watching them pounce on their mom.  The zoo has a new playground by the cafe and you and Luke love to play after we make our rounds seeing the animals.  You climb all over it and go down the slide all by yourself.  It's always fun being able to go and enjoy ourselves!

You are still such a great eater.  And surprisingly, you love egg rolls!  We totally expected you to spit it out, but you devoured the entire egg roll.  We're lucky you like to try different things, you're pretty good to at least try something.  You are not a fan of grilled cheese sandwiches and you don't really care for macaroni and cheese.

I can't believe you're going to be two.  You are my baby.  Not my big boy.  I just don't know if I can cope…but then again, I guess there's not much choice.

We love you goose.

Letter to Baby

Dear Owie Kazoie,

Somehow we let the month fly by…I'm pretty sure I told you to SLOW it down a bit.  But I guess we'll blame it on the fact that you can't read yet that you didn't get the memo.  Either way, you're a whopping 21 months old.

The fact of the matter is, you're going to be 2 in a blink of an eye, so now would be a good time to discuss how we're going to handle this terrible 2 stage.  I'm afraid we're already starting to show signs of what a terror you're going to be, so maybe we need to nip this in the bud now.  Here's how mommy and daddy think you should behave in let's just say a pretend situation.
                Luke takes your toy.
                You hit Luke.
                We discipline Luke.
We discipline you for hitting and put you in time out.
You listen carefully and sit in time out for you two minutes nicely.
You get up when you're told and the rest of play time is awesome.

But here's how the scenario really goes:
               Luke takes your toy.
               You hit Luke.
               We discipline Luke
We discipline you for hitting and sit you in time out.
               You get up.
                We put you back.
You hit us after getting out of time out once again.
We get mad and put you back in time out.
               You get mad.
               We put you back.
Finally we realize that this is not working and you continue to terrorize your brother.

You see?  You're uncooperative and stubborn.  And strong willed.  And hard headed.  And sweet.  And kind.  And amazing.  And so no matter how many times we put you in time out, you still win with your cuteness.

Now lets talk about nap time.  I don't know why, but we cannot get you out of the car asleep and put you in your crib.  You cry.  You pitch fits.  You throw your blanket and pacifiers out of the crib.  You get you're legs stuck in the slats of the crib.  You're exhausted.  We're exhausted.  Just take your nap for the love of pete!  We all need a little break and nap time is there just for that reason.

Now on to vocabulary.  It's growing…sort of.  You have final consonant deletion on every word, but that's probably because you're still stuck to the pacifier.  You're doing better without it during the day, especially at school, but at home it's a little harder…or maybe mommy is just more dependent on it than your teacher at school is.  Either way, you can say 'back', 'cat', 'go', 'amen', 'me', 'bubble', 'bubba', 'no', 'eat', 'more', 'yay', 'fish', 'dog', and probably several more, they just aren't coming to mind right now.

You love playing outside and 'driving' the jeep that you and Luke have, or getting in the front seat of the car and turning all the knobs and pushing all the buttons.  You love singing and know a few signs to 'I Stand All Amazed' and some of the dances to 'Fruit of the Spirit'.  You love playing 'Ring Around the Rosie' and your favorite part is falling down with Luke.  You still are my little ball boy, you love to play with balls and people are amazed at how well you dribble.  You love books and get so excited to read your favorites.  Right now those favorite books include 'Good Dog Carl' and 'Pajama Time'.

We love watching you explore and learn new things.  You've started going down the slide by yourself! You love going to the zoo, especially when you get to play on the playground.  You can climb up on the couch by yourself and you can get down from mom and dad's big bed by yourself.  You're learning so many things I just can't keep track!

We love you little one.

Letter to Baby

Dear Mister Man,

Owie, you are 20 months old.  Just 4 short months away from being two!  I can't believe that we're reaching the terrible twos this quickly!

You crack me up daily.  You stick your lip out, fold your arms and turn away from us when you're mad.  You open your mouth up real wide and let out the funniest laughs when you're torturing poor Baxter or Luke.  You just have the best expressions lately and I can't get enough!

But I'll tell you what I do have enough of, and that's you waking up in the middle of the night or when we put you down for bed.  Seriously, it's been going on for two weeks now and I'm so over it.  I sure hope you don't have an ear infection, but we'll go to the ENT in a week or two and find out for sure, but I think it's just some sort of habit you've gotten yourself into.  Wanna stop?  It'd make our lives so much more enjoyable.  Thanks :)

You're talking so much more than you were last month, and that probably has a lot to do with having your pacifier out more often.  You can say 'fish' 'please' 'mama' 'dada' 'dog' 'quack quack' 'bubba' 'bubble' 'amen' and I'm sure there's more I'm missing, but that's a huge improvement over last month! :)

You have had your first haircut.  We finally broke down and cut off your baby mullet, it was getting long enough to put in a ponytail so it was definitely time.  You did really well and you look so handsome and big boy instead of a little baby.  But I guess you have to get ready for summer, and so off went the mullet.

You love going to the park down the road from the house and you are great about climbing up the stairs and going down the slide now.  Last month I could barely get you to go down the slide.  This month you're doing it all by yourself!  And you love the swings.  You just lean your head back and laugh.  It's the cutest thing.  Really, seriously cute.

We love you little mister man,
mom and dad

Letter to Baby

Dear Owen,

You are 19 months old now and I adore every bit of you.  Your hair is getting long, it's starting to look like a mullet.  Can you say party in the back?  Your feet are growing like a weed, your tubes are starting to work their way out and your throwing arm is getting stronger.

Your vocabulary is growing and now includes the words 'bubble', 'ish' (fish) and 'mo' (more).  We have to tell you to take your paci out, say the word, which sometimes you do, and then you put the paci back in.  But I'm so glad you're learning more words.  Your receptive vocabulary is still amazing, so I know the expressive part will get there in time.

You've been running a fever for about the last 4 days off and on  I got a phone call from your school last week and had to come get you.  Your M came and picked you up, took you home to rest.  The rest of the weekend you would have spurts where you felt great and played, then would spike a fever and crash.  M took off Monday from work to keep you and Daddy was able to take off work yesterday (Tuesday) to keep you.  You stopped running a fever finally so you'll go back to school today.  We took you to the ENT I work with and you were fine ear, nose and throat wise, so off to school you go now.

Getting to stay home with dad must've been tons of fun.  Daddy made a pallet in the floor for you to lay on and relax.  You went to the store with him and got a bunch of groceries and a new ball.  Daddy even took you to the park and pushed you in the swing.  What fun!  Monday evening Daddy came to pick you up from M and took you back home so he could keep you Tuesday.  Mommy and Luke stayed at M and Pa's for the night.  I'm sure you loved having Daddy all to yourself for a night!

We put up a little basketball hoop and you love it.  You are pretty good at making baskets already and I know you'll be our little basketball player.  You have a knack for it already!  I have a feeling you'll be into a few sports.  If it includes a ball, I'm sure you'll want to play.

You're cutting your canine teeth right now, and to be honest, I think that's been part of the fever, if not all of it.  You are still a terrible teether and I hope you get them all out of the way sooner than later.  It's no fun for you or for us!

When you and Luke play together, and something happens, you come running to mom and dad and point and say 'bubba' to let us know that he's done something that upsets you.  Or you come running to us and say 'uh oh' to let us know there's something wrong.  You're really good at getting your point across.

We love you Owen.

Letter to Baby

Dear 18th month old that calls me mom,

You are the cutest, stockiest, funniest, cuddliest, most adorable mean little stink on the planet.  Seriously.  You hit when you don't get your way.  You pitch fits of epic proportions.  You throw, knock down or kick when things just don't go the way you planned it would.  It's really a good thing you only act this way at home or around people you're most comfortable with.  So far we haven't had any incidents at school.

You love dancing.  And music.  Any music can get you on your feet moving and grooving.  And you love playing 'Ring Around the Rosie'.  You fall down and clap your hands.  One of you're favorite songs says 'Peanut sittin' on a railroad track, his heart was all a flutter.  Along came a choo-choo train, smashed him flat! (Clap your hands together here) Choo-Choo peanut butter'.  You move your little arms like you're a little choo-choo, and when it comes to clapping your hands together, you get the best little look on your face like it will be the best clap ever.  Seriously too cute.

You're in nursery now at church, and because church is during your nap time, it's really hard.  You scream and cry when I drop you off, but then when you get settled and I come back to check on you through the mirror, you're playing and having a grand old time.  Your nursery leaders are so considerate to you and your pacifier addiction as well.

You've learned a few new words, the most notable is 'melmo' otherwise known as 'elmo'.  It took me a while to figure it out, but when you started pointing to your diaper, which has elmo on them, I put two and two together.  Your mom is a pretty smart lady, you know :).

You are loving oranges.  Not so much a fan of orange juice, but you can chow down on some oranges. You still love chicken, black olives, fries, fish sticks and peas.  You've tried rice a few times and despise it.  And all of a sudden you won't eat grilled cheese sandwiches.  What's up with that?

You love climbing all over your dad, painting with Luke, playing Trouble with the family, loving on Baxter and stealing Luke's toys.  Oh, you love to torture your brother.  You can be his best buddy, but you can be so mean to him, too.  I know that's just brothers and how you roll, but I really wish you could be just a little kinder to your brother.  He loves you so much.

You're not a fan of the snow.  Not just a fan, but hate everything about it.  Sledding down the hill?  Nope, hate it.  Build a snow man?  Absolutely not.  You just would rather the weather produce no snow or ice and you could be satisfied.

We love you little one, for always.

Letter to my 4 year old

Baby Luke,

Turns out, you're not so much a baby anymore.  As you would put it, 'I'm 4, I'm not a baby, I'm a big boy.'  As a matter of fact, you've sprouted up this past year.  You're face has changed into a more little boy look.  You have a TON of hair.  You have opinions and the vocabulary to back them.

This past year has been so awesome.  We've had vacations to the beach, twice.  You loved the sand and playing with daddy, and for a few minutes you actually liked the ocean, but then you were over it.  We've been to Dallas to play and shop.  We've been to Branson and Silver Dollar City.  We've been to visit your Grandma and Grandpa in Northwest Arkansas.

At Silver Dollar City you loved riding the rides.  You're favorite was the roller coaster - kid sized.  I can't believe you liked it!  You're definitely more of dare devil than I realized :)  We waited in line for the parade and in true Luke fashion, you made friends with the kiddos beside us.  We weren't able to stay for the parade because you and Owen were just way too tired.  We had a great little trip and I think that we may make that a yearly trip.

You're learning so much!  You know you're 'ABCs', you can count to thirty, you know shapes, colors and the sounds the letters make.  You can write your name.  You love to look at the letters in all your books and try to figure out what they say.  Your preschool teacher is Mrs. Amanda and we think she's great.  She lets you and your class do so many fun things.  You paint, draw and craft.  I know you always have a great time.

Your favorite movies right now are 'Planes' (we're watching it right now), 'Wreck It Ralph' and of course, the all time favorite, 'Cars'.  You love playing the game 'Trouble'.  We play it all the time.  Your favorite part is sending mom and dad home.  You won last night, but when you lose, you're a bit of a sore loser so we're working on being a good sport.  Dad has yet to win a game.

We still stay at M and Pa's some during the week, and you love getting away with murder there.  You and Owen seem to rule the roost while we're there.  You sleep with mommy on the pull out couch, and most nights we're fine, but we sleep with a pillow in between us because your little foot likes to find its way to my back.  Ouch!

Your vocabulary is amazing.  You pick up everything and are really pretty articulate.  You've turned into quite the little helper.  You can turn the lights on by yourself, you can wash your hands, put your shoes on, clean up toys, put in a DVD by yourself, get into the car by yourself.  All of these little things really add up and help us so much!

Oh!  and you're FINALLY fully potty trained!  What a relief!!

You are kind hearted, gentle, you love your brother and are so good playing with him (most of the time).  You know what you want, you don't pitch too many fits.  You love to read books.  You still have Monkey.  You love your family and we love you.

We love you and can't wait to see what the next year brings.  Happy 4th!

Letter to Baby

Dear Mr.,

You are cutting all four one year old molars at the same time, and that's why this letter is late.  You are mean you are cutting teeth.  You are cranky when you are cutting teeth.  You are clingy, whiney, mad, tired, and a down right bear when you are cutting teeth.  If this is how you act when you lose a tooth, I'm sunk.

And if I could pry that pacifier out of your mouth for five seconds I'm sure you would start speaking.  But as it stands, it all comes out 'ga' or 'da' or '{add a consonant of your choosing}ah'.  Ball, mama, dada are still plenty understandable.  The rest, not so much.  Your comprehensive vocabulary is amazing and you're really great at relaying what you want by a series of points and sounds, but you have got to start getting some more words!

When you're feeling good, you're a ton of fun.  You love to crawl all over us, give us high fives, play catch, race cars with Luke, enjoy pizza, picnic and a movie night.  You like to pull all of dad's shoes out of his closet and make a big pile.  He doesn't enjoy that, but I think it's quite funny.

M has been picking you and Luke up at school and taking you to the library to play.   I think you really love getting to go with them and enjoy the play time.  M and Pa think you are so funny, but know you've got a little mean streak in you.  We have to be careful, especially because you like to slap and you just don't know your own strength!

You had an awesome Christmas and enjoyed ripping open packages.  You didn't really care what the present was, but the tearing of paper was right up your alley.  Santa was pretty good to you and Luke this year.  No coal in your stocking!

We celebrated the new year by going to bed on time and sleeping in to five a.m. the new year's day.  It was very exciting and super glamorous.  Actually, it was exactly what we all needed!  And now that we're in the new year, it means you're going to be eighteen months old and then 2 and then before we know it, you'll have a job and be moving out of the house.

But as for now, we want you to know how much we love you.  Crankiness and all.
Loves,
Mom and Dad

Letter to Baby

Baby Owen,

You're 16 months old and just coming in with a new trick - the temper tantrum.  And molars.  And they don't mix.  Let's start with the temper tantrum…

I found out you had been working on the art of the well known temper tantrum when I picked you up from school last week.  Luke had been picked up previously by M so it was just us.  When we got upstairs to leave and were walking out of the building into the parking lot I went to hold your hold and you promptly snatched it away.  I explained, best I could to a sixteen month old, that we hold hands in parking lots and went to grab your hand again.  And you snatched away.  I gave you one more opportunity to give me your hand and when you didn't comply I picked you up to carry you to the car.  And that's when the temper tantrum began.  As I picked you up, you threw yourself backwards, stuck your hips and stiffened up.  Screaming is what normally occurs, the sound out of your mouth sounded like you alerting authorities ten miles away.  While I tried to put you in your carseat you tried to throw yourself out.  I had to push down on your belly and fight the straps while you're fighting me.  Can you say stubborn?

And those molars.  If you can shove an object back into your mouth to relieve some of the pain, you're going to do it.  Luke's toothbrush?  Check.  Mommy's eye drops?  Check.  Add that with a sore throat and a round of antibiotics and call me wiped.  I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but you are a terrible teether.

You still love your usual foods, and we tried to give you crawfish last night but you wouldn't try it.  You typically will try new foods.  You do love the noodles from sausage and peppers and black eyed peas.  And you still love to feed Baxter.  It's a wonder he even eats his dog food anymore.

We've been iced in the last couple of days and cabin fever hasn't been too terrible.  You helped me glue on some cotton balls to make Santa's beard, you've helped me measure fabric and watch videos on how to sew on bias tape.  Ok, maybe cabin fever has set in.  I suggested to your father we take you and Luke outside, but he said it was so slick outside that he didn't think it would be enjoyable.  We didn't really get any snow, just a ton of sleet, so I agreed.  No sense in an unnecessary ER trip.

You can imitate animal sounds and call Baxter 'umph umph' which is really 'woof woof' but you won't take your passy out.  You are starting to say 'dada' a lot more and you said 'my ball' the other day several times.  We're working on saying 'luke' 'passy' and 'cup', but again, that passy is stuck in that mouth of yours which makes talking a little less important.

As you know, you love balls and have started tossing them in the air over and over and over again.  It keeps you entertained for a bit.  And you've started playing with cars and making little car sounds when you play.  And you and Luke will race them around the ottoman and have a blast.  I'm glad you two are really starting to play together.  But just like any siblings, it doesn't last long.  You pull Luke's hair or he  crashes his car into yours.  Someone always ends up in tears.

We're so in love with you, don't ever forget that.

Letter to Baby

Dear Owen,

You are a fifteen month old and still attached to that pacifier of yours.  Somehow, though, I just can't work up the courage to snatch it from you.  It still means you're my little baby in some ways.  In others, it just means I'm pitiful.

You bit me again.  On my stomach.  It wasn't pleasant and you would be wise not to do it again.  And you also tried to pinch me.  It would behoove you to keep your teeth and your little pinchers to yourself.

You love playing outside but hate being in the grass.  Your dad raked up a bunch of leaves for you and Luke to play in, and you weren't so thrilled with the idea.  Even watching Luke run through them didn't make it more enticing.  You were much happier when your dad set you back on the driveway...back on solid ground.

You and Luke are doing a great job 'playing' together for the most part.  Sometimes he likes to torture you by stealing your toy, and sometimes you like to torture him by stealing his.  But you really do love playing with him and enjoy when he'll play with you.  You two even figured out how you could sit down on one of the push toys and Luke could push you around outside.  It was great fun till Luke took a turn a little too sharp and you toppled out.  You ended up with a scratch on your nose and some pavement burn on your forehead, but it didn't take too long to get over it and move on to the next activity.

You love to tackle me and your father and you'll run at us full speed when we're all in the floor playing and throw your little body at us.  We've nicknamed you 'Mack'.  It's because it's equivalent to being hit by a mack truck.  Funny thing is, your middle name was almost Mac, because that's your Great Grandma's maiden name....well, part of it at least.

You are still a good eater, not too picky like your brother.  You won't touch a hot dog with a ten foot pole though.  You will throw it all in the floor, which is just fine with Baxter.  As a matter of fact, you throw a lot of food in the floor for Baxter's enjoyment, but that usually signals you've had enough and you're ready to go do something else.  Every once in a while you'll wonder back to the table and beg for a bite of whatever your dad and I are eating.  And you still love ice cream.  That has to be your favorite treat of all, and your Pa loves feeding it to you.

We met your new cousin, Brooke, last week and I kneeled down with her to let you see and you kissed her side.  It was so sweet!  I must admit, I was a little worried you were going to scream and hit with the sight of me holding another baby, but you had Rylie (the dog), Luke and Uncle Jon to play with, so it didn't phase you too much.

We haven't really added any words to your vocabulary, which is sad, but you love reading books and your receptive language is great.  You do know how to get your point across and show us what you want.  You are an expert at shaking your head 'yes' and 'no' until we get it right :).

You're hair is getting longer and starting to flip up in the back, but you are not in need of a haircut quite yet!  It has a little red tint to it so I know where you get the temper :)

You're perfect in every way and we love you!

Letter to Baby

Dear Owen,

You are fourteen months and some change.  The time keeps speeding by faster and faster and I'm not sure how well I'm adjusting.

I've been going through all the clothes you've outgrown lately, and since we aren't planning on having any more little ones, I'm donating to other babies.  I've kept a few things, the special things that I just can't bear to let go, but most of it's going.  Seriously, you and your wife won't want any of this when you have kids in 40 years.  This stuff will be so old fashion by then.  So just expect to bring your baby home in what I keep of yours.  Unless it's a girl, in which case, dye it pink :)

You're practically running now.  You love to play chase and you race to the couch and lay your head down on the cushion like it's 'safe'.  You are becoming so independent, unless of course you are tired or just generally upset.  In which case you can totally throw a fit until we pick you up and you stop the water works.  You are pretty crafty at making us feel like awful parents until you get your way.

And you bit me.  Twice.  Today.  And all I have to say is - Ow!  We'll nip that in the bud real quick.

You are really good at finger pointing and getting what you want.  Your favorite thing to throw a fit over right now is a remote.  We just take batteries out and hand it over.  You point it at the TV and have a great time.

And you love playing with Luke.  And vice versa.  Except when you tear his train tracks apart, and then you two have to play separately for a while.  Or when he snatches toys out of your hand.  And then you have to play separately for a while.  It goes both ways.  But generally you adore each other and I'm so grateful for that.

I think you've said 'mine' a few times, but mostly you just say 'ball' and 'mama'.  Sometimes you'll get out 'dada' or 'high five'.  We're working on 'up', 'cup', 'bath' and 'book'.  So far it's not taking for your expressive language, but your receptive language is amazing.  You're a bright boy and don't you forget it.  You are loving books and, especially the tough and feel.  You are starting to imitate the sounds of animals like 'moo' and 'oink'.

You love to play outside and go on stroller rides and push toys around.  You always get covered in sidewalk chalk as well.  I've never seen anything like it!  I've been putting you in the little cozy coupe car but you haven't figured out how to pick your feet up so we can only go backwards.  It doesn't matter to you, you enjoy just being pushed around.  You really want to ride Luke's big wheel, but sorry, you're too small and your legs are too short.  Someday though!

We love how you are growing and enjoy you every single day.
You definitely keep us on our toes.

Letter to Baby

Dear Owen,

Thirteen months have passed since you entered this world at a whopping 7 pounds and 11 ounces and now you're a hefty 21 pounds and 10 ounces.  Carrying you around is getting to be hard!

You are walking.  Not just a step or two here or there.  Full blown walking.  And now you're trying to run.  You've been barefoot for so long...okay, 13 months...that we decided now that you're walking we'd put you in shoes.  And wouldn't you know, none of Luke's old shoes fit you, so we bought you some.  We put them on you and you immediately tried to kick them off.  Watching you walk in them was hilarious!  Now you're getting used to them, but you still aren't quite sure what they are.  You are definitely a barefoot kind of kid.

You've been teething, and you are the crankiest, meanest, whiniest teether on.the.planet.  It all starts with fever so you can't be at school, just in case.  Then you get mad when we don't carry your 21 pound self all over creation while we try to get things done one handed so when we set you down to play you smack us (or Luke says, high five us) in the face.  And once you're in the floor with your toys at your reach, you start whining.  And you whine until we pick you up again.  And then we repeat the process.  Stupid teeth.

You still love playing with balls.  We can break your attention from the tantrum you're throwing by saying, 'Owen, where's your ball?'  And off you go, hunting one down.  We've had to put the small hard ones away that go with some of your other toys because having them thrown at our head wasn't much fun.  You're loving your new class at daycare, you get to get out and play in the gym and they have a ton of balls, so you're in your own little paradise.  I just hope you aren't throwing them at your friends.

You love to eat...if the 21 pounds didn't clue you in.  Right now your favorite foods include peaches, yogurt, banana and cereal.  You do like to throw your food in the floor and 'feed' Baxter.  We're working on curbing that bad habit.  And you love to get into the refrigerator.  If we open that door for any reason, you're climbing in.  And you also like to help close the door.

You are just a joy (unless you're having a serious tantrum) and we love you to pieces.

Letter to the Birthday Boy

Dear Birthday Boy,

You are a whopping ONE YEAR OLD now.  You still lay your head down on my arm and let me rock you to sleep.  You giggle when I rub your back - you're most ticklish there, just like me.  You're exploring more and more, getting more teeth and beginning to walk.  My baby is one.

Back to rocking you to sleep.  We, ahem, I, have spoiled you rotten since day one.  Then night before you turned one, you slept through the night for the very first time.  It was magical.  But you've gotten in this pattern of being rocked sound asleep, and then waking up and crying the moment you feel your little body leaving mine and waking right back up and crying.  I've just had to let you cry it out, and I know it hurts your feelings, but you.have.to.sleep.  That's it, end of story.  And eventually you do fall asleep, but you put up one heck of a fight.  And you're waking up in the middle of the night now crying for your pacifier, but we've let you find it on your own and it only takes a few minutes before you're back to sleep again.

M met a lady who said you were a lap baby.  You cry and someone picks you up and puts you on their lap.  Yep, I did it to us.  You were spoiled rotten for six whole months coming to work with me and while we are at M and Pa's, you get picked up and carried around.  When we're at home you have always been toted back and forth from one spot to the next.  But then you started crawling and things became more accessible to you.  And that meant you didn't get carried and toted from one spot to the other.  Nope, you crawl after us crying, wondering why we aren't taking you with us?  Well, it's because now you're mobile.  And getting heavy.  And you're not as still so it's harder to multitask while holding you.  So I just have to let you cry.  It's not a cry because you're hurt, it's a cry because you just don't know why in the world I walked past without picking you up.  It's getting better, especially because now, you are taking steps.

Steps I say.  The precursor to walking.  The world is your oyster.  And we should probably babyproof a little more.  But right now you'll only walk for us if we stand you up, step back and hold our arms out for you.  You walk right to us and then the last step you kinda start falling forward and we catch you.  You think it's great fun, but I know you'll be walking like crazy in no time flat.

You love to sing 'Itsy Bitsy Spider' and wave your arms to all the motions.  You sing along with Luke when he sings the 'ABC' song.  You throw your arms up way over your head when we say 'How big is Owen?' and you play peek a boo.  I love all the little things you do.  And you've just started really putting your head down on our shoulder, which may be the sweetest thing ever.

You still love going to daycare, and you get excited when we walk through the doors.  You love all the interaction with the other kids and they have a big gym with a ton of balls for you to play with!  And my favorite part is when I pick you up in the afternoon, you hear my voice and start squealing with delight.  It makes my heart do some serious smiling.

You have a total of 4 teeth - 2 lower (they came in first around 10 months), and 2 upper (they came in several weeks ago).  You're curious, don't really like reading books with me (that doesn't stop me from reading at least 3 to you), love peek a boo and playing with Luke.

You are one.  An amazing one year old.  And your father and I thank Heavenly Father every day for entrusting us with you while we are on this earth.

We love you.

Letter to baby

Dear Owen,

I am so late in writing this letter this month.  I think I've been denial that my 11 month old is weeks away (now just 1 week away) from turning 1.  My baby is growing up.  Ugh, that's a tough pill to swallow.

But since you are still 11 months old, let's have a chat about all the awesome things you're doing.  Such as, you have mastered crawling!  There's nothing holding you back now, and you are so much happier now that you are completely mobile.  You pull up on absolutely everything and let those hands get you into a ton of trouble.  Case and point, I let Luke have his pancakes in the living room one morning while I went to fold the clothes.  Luke's plate was safe on the ottoman (or so I thought), but when I was done folding clothes I came back to find that you had pulled his plate off the ottoman and you and Baxter were having a good old time eating pancakes.  Meanwhile, Luke was engrossed in watching Netflix and could have cared less to come warn me that syrup was soaking into the carpet.  You both eat at the kitchen table for all meals now.  No exceptions.

You are learning more words!  In addition to 'mama, dada, baw (for ball)' you now say 'i by' for high five and 'ba' for bath and 'bye bye'.  You're one smart cookie.  You also blow kisses, but only when it's convenient, and you like to pretend sneeze and do it until someone joins in, in which case you get a pretty good case of the giggles.

You STILL aren't sleeping through the night and I've had about all I can take.  We're down to just nursing at night and I think you're so accustomed to waking up for a midnight snack (or three) that it's just part of the routine.  A few nights ago you were up and after being fed you refused to go back to bed.  I'd rock you until you were fast asleep and lay you down in your crib and you would wake right back up.  We did this a few times and finally I just left you in your crib and let you cry it out.  I was tired and we had to work the next day.  Eventually you fell asleep and as long as your fed, dry and safe, I say, cry it out.  Harsh?  Maybe.  Necessary?  Probably.

You love balls and it's the first thing you go for.  There can be a zillion other toys around and you will find the one ball to play with.  It's really entertaining watching you crawl around chasing that ball from one end of the house to the other.  Other than that, you really enjoy destroying Luke's train tracks and climbing all over daddy when he's in the floor with you.  You also love watching Luke to see what he'll do and if he'll engage you in play.  You two are so sweet!

You're eating table food now and won't hardly eat a container of baby food anymore.  It's great that you'l pretty much eat whatever we're having, it makes it easy when we're out to eat.  I'm hoping we can continue you on this path of eating what we eat so you won't be so limited as to what you like like your brother.  So far you're happy as long as you're fed.

We're getting ready for your first birthday and can't wait to celebrate!  You're a pretty awesome baby, so I know you'll be an amazing one year old.

We love you so much,
Mom and Dad

Letter to Baby

Owen,

Hi baby!  You are 10 months old now!  And you're still only growing hair down the middle of your head :)  I love feeling that fuzzy hair of yours!

You are becoming quite the stubborn little stinkpot if you catch my drift.  If it's not going you're way, you will let us know about it.  Luke is definitely the calm, easy going kid and you are the stubborn my way or the highway kid.  Phew!  You take it out of us some days, kiddo!  Relax, baby :)  One of your new favorite things is to throw yourself backwards and cry at the top of your lungs.  Not a fun trait.

One of the things we do love is how absolutely stinking adorable you are when you're in a good mood and playing.  We love to hear you laugh and Luke cracks you up.  You love to watch him climb the stairs at school as fast as he can, and you crack up when he reaches the top and declares he's the winner.  He loves to kiss you and blow raspberries on your belly.  And if you're crying, that sometimes makes you laugh.

We went on vacation a couple weeks ago and you hated the beach.  Screamed when we put sunscreen on you.  Screamed when your feet touched the sand.  Screamed at the sound of the waves.  Screamed louder when we tried to put your toes in the ocean.  Screamed in the car if I wasn't sitting in the backseat entertaining you.  There were good times, don't get me wrong, but you just weren't a fan of the sun, sand and surf.  Or the car.

You are eating table food now and you love it.  If you can gum/chew it, you're eating it.  There's not a whole lot right now you don't like.  I'm still feeding you some baby food every now and then, but I still want you to nurse for a little while longer, too.  We are starting to wean you and you don't seem to mind.  You're still waking up once or twice at night to nurse still so that's okay.  Otherwise we are giving you whole milk mixed with mommy's milk in a bottle during the day.  You seem to be adjusting well and we just introduced a sippy cup and juice.  You are just growing up!

You still aren't crawling, and frankly have no interest in doing so.  You love to walk and want us to hold your hands and walk you everywhere.  It's funny that you love to walk so much with us, but you won't walk behind a toy or along the couch.  You're stationary when it comes to that.  We'll get there one of these days, though.

We love you little one, temper and all.
Mom and Dad
